AMUR FALCON

The Manipur Forest Department, along with local communities, conducted satellite tagging to study Amur falcon migration.  Two falcons, Chiuluan 2 (male) and Gwangram (female), were tagged and released on November 8, 2023, in Tamenglong district, Manipur.

Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis)

  • Scientific Name: Falco amurensis
  • Common Name: Amur Falcon
  • Conservation Status: Protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
  • Breeding Range: Southeast Russia & Northeast China
  • Wintering Grounds: Southern Africa (Botswana, South Africa)
  • Migration Distance: ~20,000 km (one of the longest migratory routes of any bird)
  • Key Stopover Sites: Northeast India (Manipur, Nagaland), Somalia

Previous Tagging Efforts:

  • 2018: First satellite-tagging in Tamenglong, Manipur.
  • 2019: Another study tagged five falcons (Tamenglong, Manipur, Chiuluan, Puching, Phalong, Irang, and Barak).
