Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October virtually presided over the ground breaking ceremony of 33 compressed biogas plants across the country. Among them were four key projects in Assam spearheaded by Oil India Ltd (OIL) in Guwahati, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia.
The Government of India, in collaboration with Oil India Limited (OIL) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, aims to establish 25 compressed biogas (CBG) plants by 2024-25.
It is a part of India’s broader vision for a sustainable energy future, this initiative supports green energy, waste management, and economic growth.
Key Aspects of the Initiative:
- Objective: To promote the production of compressed biogas using municipal solid waste, in line with environmental and energy goals.
- Net-Zero Target: OIL plans to diversify into alternative energy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
- Swachh Bharat Mission: Supports the goals of Swachh Bharat by transforming waste into clean energy, promoting hygiene and environmental sustainability.
Technology & Environmental Impact:
- Advanced Technologies: The biogas plants will incorporate zero liquid discharge systems, minimizing their environmental footprint.
- Waste-to-Energy Conversion: Each plant will process 125 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, producing about 2 tonnes of biogas.
Economic and Social Benefits:
- Job Creation: The plants will generate employment opportunities in local communities, fostering economic development.
- Gas Distribution Integration: The produced biogas can be added to the city gas distribution network or sold directly to CNG retailers.
The establishment of 25 CBG plants marks a significant step in India’s journey toward a cleaner and greener energy future. This initiative not only helps reduce waste but also boosts the economy and promotes environmental sustainability.
OIL’s commitment to such projects reflects India’s long-term vision of achieving net-zero emissions and creating a sustainable, low-carbon future for all.
