Indian Railways’ Role in Mission Amrit Sarovar:

  • Desilt, excavate, and create water bodies near railway lines.
  • Work in coordination with district authorities and the Ministry of Rural Development.

Mission Amrit Sarovar

  • Launched: April 24, 2022, under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence.
  • Objective: Construct or rejuvenate 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district of India to address the rural water crisis and promote water sustainability.
  • Achievements (as of October 2024): Over 68,000 ponds constructed or rejuvenated across the country.

    • BISAG-N (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics) serves as the technical partner.
      • Autonomous society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
      • Established under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • Use of Geospatial Technology:
    • Geospatial data plays a pivotal role in:
      • Identifying suitable locations.
      • Executing the construction and rejuvenation of Amrit Sarovars.
