THE BORDER SECURITY FORCE (BSF)

The Border Security Force (BSF), established on 1st December 1965, is India’s first line of defense, responsible for securing the nation’s borders from external threats and managing border-related security issues. Celebrating its 60th Raising Day in 2024, the BSF remains a key pillar in India’s internal and external security framework.

Key Aspects of BSF

  • Foundation and Structure
    • Established in 1965: In the aftermath of the India-Pakistan war, the BSF was formed to enhance border management and security.
    • Structure: Equipped with an air wing, marine wing, artillery regiment, and specialized commando units for diverse operational needs.
    • Operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Deployment
    • Personnel Strength: Approximately 6 lakh personnel securing India’s vast land and maritime borders.
    • Operational Borders:
      • Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders.
      • Line of Control (LoC) in collaboration with the Indian Army.
      • Anti-Naxal operations in vulnerable regions.
  • Specialized Operations
    • Maritime Operations: Safeguards Sir Creek (Arabian Sea) and the Sundarbans delta (Bay of Bengal) using advanced watercraft.
    • UN Peacekeeping Missions: Contributes to international peace by deploying personnel globally.
  • Jurisdiction and Powers
    • Authorized to arrest, search, and seize under laws such as:
      • CrPC (1973)
      • Passports Act (1967)
      • Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (1985)
