A flood alert has been sounded downstream of the Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka’s Koppal district after one of the 33 crest gates of the massive stone masonry dam across the Tungabhadra river was washed away.

 Tungabhadra River:

  • Formed at the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra streams near Shimoga, which rise in the Western Ghats.

  • Flows into the Krishna River at Sangamaleshwaram in Andhra Pradesh.

  • Serves as part of the boundary between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

  • Total catchment area of approximately 70,000 sq km.

 Tungabhadra Reservoir:

  • Spans an area of 378 sq km, primarily in Karnataka’s Vijayanagar district.

  • One of South India’s major reservoirs for irrigation, industrial use, and drinking water.

  • Designed to mitigate famine impacts in Rayalaseema.

 Tungabhadra Board:

  • Established by presidential order in 1953.

  • Comprises a chairman appointed by the Union government and four members representing Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Union government.
