Context: The World Sustainable Development Summit in Delhi was inaugurated by the Vice-President of India. World Sustainable Development Summit:

  • This major multistakeholder gathering takes place every year. The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit was the name of the event before.

  •  It is The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) premier event held each year.

  • Since its founding in 2001, the Summit series has contributed to the globalization of ’sustainable development’ over a period of more than 20 years.

  • It is the only globally organized summit on sustainable development and the environment that is centered in the Global South.

  •  WSDS brings together the most enlightened leaders and intellectuals on the planet on a single platform in an effort to deliver sustainable solutions for the benefit of global communities.

  • The Ministries of Earth Sciences, Forests, Climate Change, and New and Renewable Energy and Environment (MoEFCC) are the parties participating.

Key facts about World Sustainable Development Summit-2024

  • The summit’s 23rd iteration is called WSDS 2024.

  • The theme of WSDS 2024 is ‘Leadership for the Sustainable Development and Climate Justice’.

  • Discussion points include incorporating Sustainable Development, using natural solutions, fostering resilience and adaptability, tackling the energy trilemma, and taking action on climate change.

  • A significant publication ‘Vasundhara Magazine’ will be introduced in its fourteenth edition, ‘EquiClimate’ with the theme- Climate Injustice: Vulnerabilities of the Vulnerable’

  •  It was founded in 1974 as a resource for energy-related information.

  •  TERI’s research operations began in late 1982, motivated by the organization’s strong belief that development would be accelerated by the efficient use of energy and the sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Global Inspiration in Sustainability: India leads with innovative projects that harmonize economic growth with environmental preservation and has set high targets for renewable energy use.

There’s never been more support for electric automobiles. More emphasis is being placed on the circular economy in the true spirit of sustainability. The introduction of flagship programs that put environmental protection first, the budgeting of green projects, and the incorporation of sustainability into national planning demonstrate India’s leadership.
