As of March 31, 2024, nearly 50% of Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I has been completed. The entire phase is expected to be finished by 2027-28.

Vision 2047:

  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to create high-speed corridors within 100-150 km of all citizens.

  • The Vision 2047 outlines the Master Plan for highway and infrastructure development in India.

Bharatmala Pariyojana

  • An umbrella program launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

  • Phase-I was initiated in 2017, with a previous completion target of 2022, now extended due to delays and financial issues.

  • Part of the PM Gati-Shakti Plan, which also includes the Sagarmala project for port modernization and coastal shipping.

  • Funded through Central Road and Infrastructure Fund cess, remittances, budgetary support, national highway monetization, Internal and Extra Budgetary Resources, and private investment.

  • Coverage: 34,800 km across 31 states and UTs, impacting over 550 districts.

Key Features:

Economic Corridors:

  • Develops approximately 26,000 km of economic corridors.

  • Integrates Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and North-South and East-West (NS-EW) Corridors to enhance freight traffic efficiency. 

  • Inter-State and Feeder Routes: Enhances connectivity with 8,000 km of interstate corridors and 7,500 km of feeder routes for first-mile and last-mile connectivity.

  • Border and International Connectivity: Improves border infrastructure for trade facilitation with neighboring countries.

  • Coastal and Port Connectivity: Boosts economic development through connectivity to ports and coastal areas, fostering tourism and industrial growth.

  • Green-Field Expressways: Develops new expressways to alleviate traffic bottlenecks and improve traffic flow.

Way forward:

  • Secure raw materials at competitive rates and negotiate favorable terms with suppliers.

  • Streamline land acquisition with transparent practices and consider land pooling to minimize disputes.

  • Address impacts of tax changes through stable GST policies and coordination with government authorities.
