  • Californium is a silvery-white synthetic metal with the atomic number 98.

  • Created in 1950 at Berkeley, California, it is a strong neutron emitter used in portable metal detectors, oil well exploration, and detecting metal fatigue in aircraft.

  • It is extremely radioactive and costly, with one gram priced at Rs 17 crore on the international market.
