Californium is a silvery-white synthetic metal with the atomic number 98.
Created in 1950 at Berkeley, California, it is a strong neutron emitter used in portable metal detectors, oil well exploration, and detecting metal fatigue in aircraft.
It is extremely radioactive and costly, with one gram priced at Rs 17 crore on the international market.
