Lachit Borphukan’s History
- Birth and Early Life:
- Born on November 24, 1622, in Charaideo, Assam.
- Youngest son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua, a prominent statesman and general under King Pratap Singha.
- Education and Early Career:
- Received training in humanities, military skills, and scriptures.
- Held key positions such as:
- Ghora Barua (Superintendent of Royal Horses).
- Dulia Barua (Superintendent of Royal Palanquins).
- Simaluguria Phukan (Commandant at Simaluguri near the capital).
- Dolakasharia Barua (Superintendent of armed guards for the king).
- Appointment as Borphukan:
- Appointed as Borphukan (Viceroy of the Western Provinces) and commander-in-chief of the Ahom army in 1667.
- Entrusted with the mission to reclaim Guwahati from Mughal control.
- Recapture of Guwahati:
- Led the Ahom forces in a strategic campaign.
- Successfully recaptured Guwahati in November 1667 after the fall of the Itakhuli fort.
- Battle of Alaboi (1669):
- Faced a setback in August 1669 during the battle against the Mughal army.
- Ahom forces suffered significant casualties.
- Battle of Saraighat (1671):
- Demonstrated exceptional military acumen in this naval defense on the Brahmaputra River.
- Achieved a decisive victory over the Mughal forces in March 1671.
- Celebrated as a pivotal moment in Assamese history.
- Death:
- Passed away on April 25, 1672, shortly after the victory at Saraighat.
- Buried at his maidam (burial tomb) in Jorhat, Assam.
