Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has transformed over 56,000 square meters of garbage dumps and barren lands into lush green forests using the Miyawaki Technique.
Miyawaki Technique:
Developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, this method focuses on creating dense, fast-growing forests by replicating natural ecosystems. Known as the ‘pot plantation method,’ it involves planting trees and shrubs in close proximity to speed up their growth.
Key Features:
- Dense Planting: Uses native species planted closely together.
- Accelerated Growth: Trees grow up to 10 times faster than in conventional forests.
- Soil Restoration: Improves soil fertility and encourages natural regeneration.
- Biodiversity Enhancement: Supports diverse flora and fauna.
Significance:
- Urban Reforestation: Transforms barren and polluted areas into vibrant green spaces.
- Environmental Benefits: Reduces air and water pollution, absorbs significant carbon, and decreases temperatures by 4–7°C.
- Sustainability: Mitigates soil erosion and fosters ecological balance, aiding long-term environmental restoration.
