Prime Minister Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit along with the President of France, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron in Paris. What is the Paris AI Summit? It is the third global AI safety summit, following UK (2023) and South Korea (2024) Co-hosted by: Indian PM Narendra Modi & French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Participants: World leaders, tech executives, policymakers, and startup founders. Agenda: Shaping the future of AI governance, innovation, and ethics. Addressing challenges like regulatory overreach while harnessing AI’s potential. Building a global consensus to ensure AI applications are inclusive and sustainable. AI: The New Industrial Revolution Just as the Industrial Revolution transformed economies from agrarian to industrial, AI is revolutionizing decision-making and automation. AI’s ability to analyze large datasets at high speeds is reshaping industries across the world. Globalization ensures AI is not monopolized by a select few nations, making global cooperation essential. AI Summit Declaration & Global Stance 61 nations, including India, France, Germany, and China, signed the declaration. The declaration emphasized AI as open, transparent, ethical, secure, and sustainable. US & UK abstained, without specifying their reasons, preventing a broad consensus. India’s Contributions & Vision for AI Developed its own Large Language Model (LLM), showcasing advancements in AI research. Advocated for greater inclusivity in the Global Partnership for AI (GPAI), highlighting Global South priorities. India’s Public-Private Model: Pooling computational resources to support startups and researchers at affordable costs. Ensuring AI development is accessible to all and not restricted to a few tech giants. AI Summit Conclusion Adopted the Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable AI for People and the Planet. Aligned with the Paris Pact for People and the Planet. Key focus areas: Reducing digital divides through AI accessibility. Ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, and trustworthy. Encouraging innovation and responsible AI deployment. Framework for Trustworthy AI – Key Initiatives (a) Coalition for Environmentally Sustainable AI Aims to place AI on an eco-friendly and sustainable path. Initiated by France in collaboration with UNEP & ITU. India is a founding member of the coalition. (b) Current AI – A Public Interest Partnership Promotes AI for public good, focusing on data, openness, and accountability. Target: Raise $2.5 billion over the next five years for AI development. India is a partner country in this initiative. (c) Paris Charter for AI of General Interest Establishes guiding principles for ethical AI development: Openness to encourage scientific progress and innovation. Accountability at every stage of AI design and implementation. Transparency and participation to ensure AI serves the public interest. India adopted the charter, reinforcing its commitment to responsible AI. (d) Paris Declaration on Maintaining Human Control in AI-Enabled Weapon Systems Focuses on ensuring human oversight in AI-driven military applications. India did not endorse the declaration, signaling a cautious approach toward AI in defense. The Way Forward Strengthening global AI governance frameworks to ensure fair and inclusive growth. Promoting AI collaboration among nations, especially benefiting developing economies. Balancing technological progress with ethical considerations and regulatory safeguards. AI Summit 2025 highlighted the need for global cooperation to ensure responsible AI development. India emerged as a key player, advocating for inclusive AI policies and ethical frameworks while showcasing its technological progress. The challenge now lies in bridging global differences and ensuring AI benefits all of humanity, not just a privileged few.
